The vision behind Coventry's Cultural Strategy
Coventry is one of the youngest cities in Europe, with nearly half its population under 30. It is also one of the most diverse, with residents from over 100 countries speaking more than 60 languages. This extraordinary mix of youth, diversity and creativity makes Coventry a unique cultural city.
The Cultural Strategy 2017–2027 sets out a ten-year vision to harness this energy — placing culture at the heart of the city's growth, identity and wellbeing. It was developed through an extensive consultation process that engaged thousands of residents, artists, organisations and businesses.
Culture is not an add-on. It is fundamental to who we are as a city, how we live, and how the world sees us.
Coventry has experienced significant regeneration and investment. The city's successful bid for UK City of Culture brought unprecedented national and international attention. This strategy ensures that the cultural momentum continues well beyond any single year — embedding creativity into the fabric of the city for the next decade.
The strategy identifies key goals, principles and big ideas that will guide cultural investment, programming and partnership across the city from 2017 to 2027. It is a living document — designed to evolve as the city grows and as new opportunities emerge.
This strategy was not written in isolation. It reflects the voices of thousands of Coventry residents, artists, young people, businesses and cultural organisations who contributed through an extensive consultation process. Their aspirations, concerns and ideas are woven into every aspect of the strategy.
